Choose your base in 30 seconds

Default first-time base?

Alsancak

Kordon promenade, cafés and metro links — best evenings.

Want the bazaar and ferries on foot?

Konak

Central and gritty — good value, noisier nights.

Summer beach extension only?

Çeşme

Peninsula beaches — not an Ephesus base.

Or answer four questions

Eliminates areas and tells you why each one was ruled out, then names the trade-off you are accepting.

1.Is this your first visit?

2.Do you need a quiet night?

3.Are steep hills and stairs a problem?

4.Do you want dinner and bars within walking distance?

Answer all four and we'll narrow seven neighbourhoods down to one, and tell you what you're giving up.

Schematic, not to scale — it exists to show which side of which waterway you are on. Prototype: a production version would use MapLibre with OpenStreetMap tiles.

Areas most people should skip

Nowhere central is unsafe. These are simply poor value for a short visit.

Bornova on a two-night Ephesus trip

Student district — cheap but you commute everywhere; Alsancak is worth the difference.

Çeşme instead of Alsancak for ruins

80 km from Ephesus day-trip logic — base in the city, beach later.

How your choice affects your days

Transport from your base

Alsancak and Konak connect by metro and ferry. Ephesus day trips start with İzban train to Selçuk — not from Çeşme.

Common questions

Alsancak or Selçuk for Ephesus?+

Alsancak for flights, food and evenings. Selçuk only if ruins are your sole focus.

Should I stay in Çeşme?+

Only as a beach add-on with three nights or more — not on a two-day Ephesus trip.

How we ranked these

Areas are scored on six dimensions — first-timer convenience, value, dining, nightlife, quiet and transport — plus three hard signals the matcher uses to eliminate: hilliness, night noise, and whether you can walk to the main sights. Nightly ranges are typical mid-week shoulder-season figures for a double room, refreshed quarterly.

We earn a commission if you book through the links on this page. It does not change the ranking, and it is why the “areas to skip” section exists.
